TEAM BUILDING:
A Workbook for Foster Families and Social Workers

Donna Gillespie Foster

Not too long ago the word "team" was fairly rare in the family foster care program vocabulary. The public image had many folk consider the foster parents' job to babysit for the children in care. Don't ask questions, don't offer information concerning the child. It was not routine for a foster parent to be asked their opinion on how they thought the child's future should go. All that was expected was to just take care of the children's basic needs: three hots and a cot.

The word "team" is very common in the English language. We hear about athletic teams, business teams, community teams, professional teams and the like. We hear people proclaim that they are a part of a "team." The reality is that many people consider themselves a member of a team but when ask to describe or define their "team" or their roles as team members they come up empty. The word "team" is used frequently but without any clear, functional definition of what it is or how it works.

This workbook discusses being a part of a "team." What is a team and how do we know we are in a solid, goal oriented group? Is being on a team something we "talk" about or is it something we "do?"

The workbook content includes:

Chapter 1: Setting the Stage;

Chapter 2: What is a Team?;

Chapter 3: Roles and Responsibilities;

Chapter 4: The Supervisor's Role in the Team Leadership;

Chapter 5: Steps to Building a Team;
